Some people find the world of de-icers, ice melters, anti-icers, or basic ice removal compounds somewhat confusing, especially with all the claims various manufacturers make regarding these products.
Q: What Is the Difference Between a De-icer, Ice Melter, or an Anti-icer?
Anything used to melt the ice is considered a de-icer or ice melter. It does not matter what the material composition is, or what format it comes in. Many people assume that the word “ice melter” means that it is somehow eco-friendly. This is simply not the case. Rock salt and other ice melters containing urea are not eco-friendly and can be a major contributor to harmful algal bloom species in coastal and estuarine waters.
An anti-icer is any product that can be applied to a surface before a storm to help prevent ice build-up from occurring. Anti-icers come in granular or liquid formats.
Safest for the Environment

Calcium Magnesium Acetate (CMA) is a relatively recent addition to the arsenal in the fight against road and walkway ice. It is the primary ingredient found in Winter Warrior Enviro LEADer™ Ice Melter. It’s a specially encapsulated, formulated product, made of dolomite lime and acetic acid, and it acts as a corrosion inhibitor. It has been dyed green so users can easily see their application rate, limiting overspread of the product. Everyone can see that the ice melter has been applied, thereby reducing liability claims. Winter Warrior Enviro LEADer™ Ice Melter is readily biodegradable at low temperatures and safe on the environment. It has a neutral pH balance of 7.5–8.5. When compared to other ice melters, like urea. It has a relatively low biological oxygen demand. It contains no nitrogen, so it’s safe around aquatic life as well.
One of the great features of CMA is that it is biodegradable, as it breaks down into CO2 and H2O, so it is harmless for roadside vegetation. It biodegrades in two to four weeks (depending on ambient temperatures) and does not harm soil structures like Rock Salt does – which makes soil cloddy and impermeable. Therefore, CMA discourages erosion by permitting plant life to properly take root. It has poor mobility in soil so that unlike salt, it is not likely to reach groundwater sources.
